Typical figures for the species, gathered from avian references. Individual birds vary.

The Orange-wing is often the least expensive Amazon available and it is regularly bought for that reason alone. That is a shame, because it has a genuine argument in its favour that has nothing to do with price: keepers widely describe it as the mildest of the commonly kept Amazons through hormonal season, which is the single biggest problem with the family.

Easier through the season

All Amazons come into breeding condition from around four to six years old and become territorial with it. Keepers who have kept several species generally rate the Orange-wing the gentlest of them - still a change, still weeks of being careful, but without the intensity of a Yellow-nape or a Double Yellow Head. For a family house, that difference matters more than any difference in talking ability.

Talking

Fair rather than outstanding. An Orange-wing will learn words and use them, in a voice less clear than the yellow-headed Amazons. Somebody buying an Amazon primarily for speech should spend more and buy a different species.

Noise

Loud, with the usual Amazon dawn and dusk calling. Not a flat bird.

Temperament varies a great deal

Orange-wings range from outgoing and hands-on to reserved and watch-from-a-perch, and it is hard to predict from the species. Spend time with the individual bird and weigh that over any description, including this one.

Weight

Prone to obesity and fatty liver like every Amazon. Pelleted base, plenty of vegetables, nuts and seed as treats.

Fifty to sixty years

The bird will probably outlive the buyer. Arrange what happens then and write it down.

Buying one

Meet the bird more than once if you can, because the variation within the species is wide. Ask how the breeder manages hormonal season. Ask when it weaned and about disease testing. The breeders listed on this page raise Orange-wing Amazons and can be contacted directly through the site.

Common questions

How much does a Orange Wing Amazon cost?

Most Orange Wing Amazons listed on BirdBreeders.com in the last twelve months were priced between $3,800 and $4,000, with a midpoint around $3,800. That is drawn from 9 real listings by breeders on this site over that period, not an estimate. Price varies with age, hand-feeding, DNA sexing and the breeder's location.

How long do Orange Wing Amazons live?

Orange Wing Amazons typically live 50-60 years in good conditions. That is a long commitment for any household, and worth planning for before buying rather than after.

How loud are Orange Wing Amazons?

Loud. Noise is the most common reason parrots are rehomed, so it is worth being honest with yourself about your home, your neighbours and the hours you keep before choosing a species.

Do Orange Wing Amazons talk?

Some speech. No individual bird can be promised to speak, whatever the species is known for, so buy for the company rather than the conversation.

What size cage does a Orange Wing Amazon need?

A minimum of 36in x 24in x 48in, and wider matters more than taller - birds fly across rather than up. Treat any minimum as a floor rather than a target.

Are Orange Wing Amazons good for a first-time owner?

Some experience needed. Ask any breeder directly what they think of the match - a breeder who talks you out of a species is worth more than one who does not.

Do Orange Wing Amazons produce a lot of dust?

Low. It matters more than most people expect for anyone with asthma, and it is worth raising with a doctor before buying rather than afterwards.
