Typical figures for the species, gathered from avian references. Individual birds vary.

The Hahn's is the smallest macaw and one of the best arguments in aviculture that you do not need a huge bird to get the macaw experience. They are bold, clever, affectionate and comic, they live twenty-five to thirty years, and they fit in a house that could never take a Blue and Gold. What they do not do is come with a smaller voice.

Mini is the size, not the sound

A Hahn's screech is startlingly loud for a bird that weighs as little as it does, with the same harsh carrying quality as a full-size macaw. People who buy one as the quiet alternative have misread the brochure. It is a better flat bird than a large macaw only because it is easier to house, not because the neighbours will hear less of it.

Macaw character in miniature

This is the appeal and it is real. Hahn's are fearless, inquisitive, physical in play, and they bond hard. They do the macaw things - the deliberate mischief, the showing off, the attachment to a routine - at a scale that fits an ordinary room. Keepers who have had both often say the Hahn's is the better pet.

Talking

Better than most conures and better than many larger macaws. A clear small voice and a decent vocabulary if the bird is talked to. This is a genuine reason to choose one.

The beak

Smaller than a macaw beak and still a macaw beak. A Hahn's can draw blood and adolescents test. They are not a hands-off bird, but they are not a bird to leave with a small child either.

Noble or Hahn's

The two are closely related and sold under both names, with the Noble slightly larger and horn-coloured on the upper beak. Keepers report no meaningful difference in temperament. Buy on the bird, not the name.

Living with one

Twenty-five to thirty years. A cage larger than the bird looks like it needs, a pelleted base with vegetables and a few nuts, and serious chew material. They are destructive for their size.

Buying one

Hear one call before you commit. Ask when it weaned and about disease testing, and ask whether it has been handled by more than one person. The breeders listed on this page raise Hahn's Macaws and can be contacted directly through the site.

Common questions

How much does a Hahns Macaw cost?

Most Hahns Macaws listed on BirdBreeders.com in the last twelve months were priced between $3,100 and $3,500, with a midpoint around $3,499. That is drawn from 29 real listings by breeders on this site over that period, not an estimate. Price varies with age, hand-feeding, DNA sexing and the breeder's location.

How long do Hahns Macaws live?

Hahns Macaws typically live 25-30 years in good conditions. That is a long commitment for any household, and worth planning for before buying rather than after.

How loud are Hahns Macaws?

Loud. Noise is the most common reason parrots are rehomed, so it is worth being honest with yourself about your home, your neighbours and the hours you keep before choosing a species.

Do Hahns Macaws talk?

Some speech. No individual bird can be promised to speak, whatever the species is known for, so buy for the company rather than the conversation.

What size cage does a Hahns Macaw need?

A minimum of 30in x 24in x 36in, and wider matters more than taller - birds fly across rather than up. Treat any minimum as a floor rather than a target.

Are Hahns Macaws good for a first-time owner?

Some experience needed. Ask any breeder directly what they think of the match - a breeder who talks you out of a species is worth more than one who does not.

Do Hahns Macaws produce a lot of dust?

Low. It matters more than most people expect for anyone with asthma, and it is worth raising with a doctor before buying rather than afterwards.
