I have two African Greys. They are very different. The youngest one was hand fed (by me). He was terrified when I first bought him home. He as about 5 or 6 weeks old. He would hiss and open his mouth as if he wanted to bite. He slowly got over that. He is weaned and can fly now. When he is on the bottom of his cage he is aggressive in his behavior. When he is on the perch he will climb onto my hand no problem. Once he's out of his cage he's very obedient!

Why the aggressive behavior when he's on the cage floor? The other one is very obedient. He's 9 months old. Occasionally they will "get into it!" Should I separate them? For the most part, they get along well.

Thanks,

Biffster

Hi biffster,

Could you define "aggressive behavior" please?  I.E. What is the fella doin when he is on the bottom of the cage?

Assuming that they are pets and not breeders, I personally give all of my pet birds their own cage.  I feel they need to have their own space.

He'll lunge like he's going to attack. It's more show than anything. Mock biting, again more show than anything else. He doesn't do this on his perch. Only on the bottom of the cage.

Thanks

Hi biffster,

Mine do what you are explaining, along with what I call "puddle jumping".  I have foot toys in the bottoms of the cages that get flung around and beat up when they do this.  I don't think its like an aggresssive thing, looks like it sometimes, but I don't feel it is.  I actually think it might be a territory thing.  This also occurs when one of my others lands on top of the Greys cages.  If the Greys are out and another critter lands on their cages the same behavior takes place.

We have 5 Greys and all have there own personality. One named "Gonzo" which we rescued has been a feather plucker for 16 years although actualy getting some feathers back in now. We have had her for about 5 months. She is the smartest of the bunch, makes the most sounds, does the most talking, is the friendlyiest but is the pickiest eater (if you try to give her something besides a chicken leg, grape, peanut or the other few she wants she flings it accross the room) and she is the biggest "fraidy cat". She doesn't like toys..AT ALL. If you put one in her cage she goes crazy plucking and trembles at the bottom corner of the cage until you take it out. After it is gone she is fine agian. She has her moods but what I do is put my hand down as if for her to step up..she lets you know if she is "in the mood". If she is she lifts her foot (no matter where she is at)..if she isn't she doesn't lift her foot and I know to come back in a little while.

Our 3 year old female "Darling" also makes lots of sounds, etc. and does the foot thing when she want's some love. She is not a picky eater at all..she loves everything I give even stuff that is good for her. She loves toys even new ones! She loves to bathe as does Gonzo. She's a curious one and will get down from her cage to see what is going on...you have to watch her good when she is out or she will diffently get into something.

One of the males we have 13 year old "Spike" does the sneak attack..when you go for his feed or water dish to replenish them if your not paying attention he'll nip ya on the hand. He doesn't flat out try to ravish you or anything he just nips (although not pleasent). When on top of his cage he steps up fine but will not step up if you put your hand in his cage. He must come out on his terms! He is not as picky a eater as Gonzo and eats goods foods but he dunks everything into his water dish before he eats it as if to "wash off the germs first"...LOL You have to spray mist him because he will not bathe on his own. He is very quiet unlike the others. He only sounds a few clicks and bird calls..nothing much else from him. The others imitate phones, horses, dogs, birds..you name it but not him. He also is very stationary meaning he doesn't move around much he is happy just sitting on top of his cage rather than moving around much.

The other two we have are not tame although if they were I'm sure they would be different as well. Greys are like fingerprints...no two are exactly alike
