Okay, a local breeder warned me about Wal*Mart bird food. Of course this didn't set an alarm in my head beause I don't buy my fid's food from there. She told me that a month ago she sold several babies(different speicies) to different owners. Some owners came back and reported their bird was not growing properly. She asked them what they fed their birds, they all reported they fed walmart pet bird food. She investigated further and called all the other owners, and they reported the birds were fine, and very healthy. She asked them what they fed their birds, and they all got their fid's seeds from various petstores, but not walmart. Thus she finally concluded that pet bird seed from walmart does not have all the nutrients for birds and is dangerous just giving you all a heads up. My birds' food is allways from Petsmart, unless its a baby bird that needs handfeeding, and they're all healthy. If anyone disagrees with this statement, please let me know. If you have a healthy bird that you have raised and seen growth, please let me know also so I can tell her.

Absolutely right!

Don't cheap (cheep) out on your birds - if you love them - which I'm sure you do, if you're taking the time to read this.

Walmart wouldn't know the first thing about birds.....nevermind the dead fish that I've seen in their tanks!

I think owners should be looking at the ingredients list on the backs of the foods before feeding them to their birds. =)

While I agree that WalMart most likely wouldn't offer the best food for birds; it's not neccesarily their fault. Those who are buying their parrots seeds are most likely feeding seed only diets. Those who supplement with seeds will typically be mixing their own seed mixes. =)

In addition; I think they should instead complain to the company that MAKES the bird food that WalMart sells (3-D PET PRODUCTS) is the most common brand found there.

I have seen the same foods sold at WalMarts for birds sold at other Pet Stores, like PetSmart's, PetCo's & PetLand's as well as other independently owned stores that specialize in Parrots.

There is NO brand of seed mixes that has all the nutrients required for birds. "All the nutrients required by birds" is not even known in Science, let alone bird food manufacters. Not to mention seeds do nothing for birds in the way of nutrition, besides providing some lipids/fats, oils * maybe a dash of Vitamin A (Depending on the nut).

I am willing to bet the reason why her bird wasn't growing properly was because he was being fed seeds; not because of the brand of the seeds being fed.

I personally feel if a bird is failing to grow there can only be the obvious thing wrong and that is; it is not receiving a regular amount of food to sustain growth!  This bird should have been returned to the breeder immediately to correct whatever was going wrong.

I'd have to agree. a seed only diet is not healthy for our fids. Veggies, fruits, pastas, etc, should also be giving to our Fids on a daily basis.
