Hi! I'm in Iowa City, IA. I had canaries and parakeets as a child, and I'm learning as I go, now.
I have a pair of parottlets, a pair of parakeets, 1 pair of yellow canaries, and a pair of the new red ones from Tampa. I've been reading what the experts says, but have come to the conclusion that birds, as with any other animal, the individual personalities can change all the rules.
I just want my birds to be healthy and happy. The parakeets I have are from a pet shop and yes.... I felt sorry for them, so I bought them. It has taken 4 months to calm them down enough to even come close.
I am surprised by the lack of song in canaries now. Even the dullest looking ones were OK singers. These birds from 2 different parts of the country, "reliable breeders" don't sing after several months. They have a safe, secure environment, yet don't sing!
