| I am thinking of starting to breed exotic birds, I have not picked a breed yet. Doing a lot of research on how to start an exotic bird business but would like to hear from real folks in the business. Is there any information I need to know before hand, any tips on how to get started, is there a pretty good market for the babys? Any help would be much appreciated. Jenny

Well, you call them breeds, not species, and you are already asking about marketing. I don't want to burst your bubble, but you may want to rethink this. Although some breeders can make a living at this, you must love birds first to be a successful breeder. It is a very time consuming and heartbreaking job at times..
Not everyone can do this.

Well I do admit I am pretty new to birds and have not learned the language yet, not really sure that should determine if I have what it takes or not. I have done research and I assure you I have a great love for birds. I am a veterinary technician and am experienced with caring for both sick and healthy birds. I am also a wildlife rehabilitator so I am experienced with feeding baby birds and know all too well the heartbreak that comes with raising birds. I asked about marketing of birds because if I did venture into exotic bird breeding I fully plan on selling the babies. I was asking for advice on how to get started if I did decide to venture into this business not to get shot down.

| By your original post and your reply to the advice already given, I would suggest another line of business for you. You have not indicated where you are located, the amount of space you have dedicated, the amount of money you have dedicated for start-up costs and expenses, or a whole host of other considerations. Have you made a business plan or did you walk into a store and see a baby bird for $700 and say "Gee, I could be rich selling those!". You haven't selected a species, but you want advice on the marketability of babies...every species has its own market appeal, some are very popular, some are just for specific interests. Have you checked on local and State regulations regarding a business of the type you are wanting to enter? Do you have any desire to travel or take family vacations? What happens if you get sick? It won't be about you anymore, the birds come first. I hope for the birds' sake that you choose a different get rich quick scheme
