I have been breeding kitchen and Isabel canaries for years and have in that time given away (yes, free) over 40 baby canaries. I have three breeding pair, I allow them two nests per season, and I generally give them away at about 4-months' age. I am very picky about new owners and educate them as best I can in good canary care, and insist on large cages for our birds. We have about 95% hatch rate and greater than 99% survival rate, no line breeding or in-breeding. Our canaries seem pretty sturdy, with the matriarch just having died after nearly 11 years. Current patriarch is 9 years old, and we have one hand-tamed hen 6 years old, and one chick being hand-tamed now. It's fun to see that the current (6th generation) still exhibits characteristics of the original patriarch. All our birds are calm and happy.
Looking forward to reading about all types of birds here, as I plan one day to expand beyond canaries.

I love your post. I have had several birds, currently parakeets. I have owned love birds, cockatiels and several parakeets. But never a canary, not that I didn't want to just never have. I love my babies as I am sure you do. I look forward to learning more from your posts and would love to know if they are as tame as I have heard.
