I have seen breeding setups where finches are all put together in large flights of mixed species. Do they cross breed or prefer to stick to their own? Sorry, Im not a finch person.

If you have male & female of the same species they will normaly prefer their own species but say you have a single Spice Finch Male and only Society Finch Hens. Yes he will "accept" the Society hen. Exspecialy since the species are both Mannikins and very close. But say you have a Gouldian Finch Male and a Cordon Blue hen..in this case the Gouldian is an Australian Finch and the Cordon Blue is an African Waxbill..there would be little chance of them crossing. A lot of people like to breed European Goldfinches males x Canary hens to get really great singing male hybrids. Most Serins, Canaries and Carduelis finches are closely related and will also cross. Austrailan Finches such as Owls, Stars, Zebras will cross provided they do not have there own species of the opposite sex.
