I'm in a very similar situation as Dazey was in a week or two ago. I'm very much in love with a Sun Conure I saw at the pet store a few days ago. I can't even go into explanation of how wonderful he was, even though I wasn't able to physically handle him myself. I talked to many of the employees, and they all said good things about him, and even just watching him dance back at me bobbing my head I could see what they were all talking about. I'm waiting at least two weeks for everything to settle in, and see how much I want him, and to make sure I'm educated enough and financially stable to take care of him.
I have quite a few questions, one in particular that I'd love an answer to. I've been looking around every site I can find off google about Sun Conures, care, handling, behavior, origin, etc, but I haven't been able to find the answer to one specific question.
That main question, is if Sun Conures are ok to have in the same room as parakeets.
The reason I ask it so specifically is last October I adopted to Lovebirds from a local breeder/rescuer and she had warned me that when parakeets get stressed they let out a kind of hormone that's known to cause illness and/or death in other birds kept in the same room.
So far I've found nothing else about that anywhere I've looked, and I've been looking since my Lovebirds both passed away January 1st of this year for seemingly no reason. The best reason we could think up with was the fireworks scared and stressed out one, and the other was stressed when his brother passed.
I'm not as educated as I'd like to be, so any information is much appreciated. I've read through all the replies in Dazey's topic, and found it to be quite useful.
I'd also like to know some pros and cons from Sun owners/breeders that they've encountered themselves.
Also, how would you compare taking care of a Lovebird to taking care of a Sun Conure, if even possible?
Any answers and advice are greatly appreciated.
I'd like to take the time really fast to state that I understand that this is a lifetime commitment, and I'm willing to spend all my free time(and I have a bit too much of it) with my Conure. I'm also willing to put up with the noise, being partially deaf it'll be a bit toned down(the only plus side). My mom has also said she wasn't worried about the noise, and I'm not in a neighborhood that would restrict them. I'm also at a complete understanding that there's going to be huge messes to be cleaned everyday, and I have no problem with that(like I said, lots of free time), and that this isn't a cheap investment.
I currently have one book from PetSmart on Conures, and I've been looking at every site I come across for Conure information.
I apologize for the wall-of-text. I just want to make sure I'm covering what I know and what I'd like to know.
