Hello,

Great site you guys have here, I am very glad I found it. I have two breeding pairs of macaws Blue and Gold and Blue Throated. My question is what do you guys think of keeping them in a room in the basement? From what I have read quite a few people are doing this? So my question is since there are no windows what would I do for light, would any T-8 florescent strip light work? Also how would I get fresh air into the room would this be a problem. I have them in my sunroom, which is in the middle floor right now so they get both fresh air, and outside light but I would love to be able to keep them in the basement for obvious reason. I feel with them being the sunroom they see me a lot more than they should every time I walk by they all forget about what they were doing to come say “hello” I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say. Thanks for any help.

Hi Mark,

My aviary is in the "basement".  There are some things to be cautious of when putting your birdies in basement.  For lighting we have the shop lights and place the Ultraviolet tubes in them.  You can buy ultraviolet tube lights at some hardware stores, lucky for us we have a place up here and it's much cheaper than buying from Zoo-med or whatever it's called.  I did put a florescent one in once when one of my others burnt out, it was a huge difference...and I made the birdies mad

We also have glass block windows that are vented-they open and allow air and out.  I actually can have too much humidity and run a dehumidifier most of the year.  Plus we have 2 vents from the furnace that run through the basement.  I also take a box fan down a couple times a week to "move things around".  I don't want my air to be stagnant.  But our basement doesnt have that basement "smell".  It's bright, clean, and good smelling.  I don't have bigger breeding birds anymore so for me it is much much easier to maintain.  My birds poop the size of a booger, Macaws are probably pooping the size of a human head?  I hope that I could help a bit
