| I bought a young male eclectus about 7 years ago, and although I've owned other parrots (african greys, yellow nape, blue front) I am sooo in love with the eclectus! I cant figure out why they aren't as available or well known as amazons are. (or, is it just my area that doesn't have many?) I find the eclectus to be even tempered, calm, not very destructive to persons or property and just overall delightful! I don't have to fear the moodiness or wonder when I will be bitten. This bird is family member and I take him to the elementary school I work, and he is just as sweet to kids and everyone....I've met a few others with eclectus and most have the same temperment and personality, so I don't think I lucked out, I think it is the breed of bird. We even took it a step further and got him a mate, and he is a good doting daddy...but still he remains the loveable pet we know and love!!! Any comments out there? I'd love to chat about eclectus... One reason they are not as common is probably because not as many people breed them. They can get more for a Grey or Too. I love the females but don't care much for the green males although they are easy to sex which you can't say for most "hookbills".

| Hi my name is David Christensen from Country Manor Pet Therapy and we use Eclectus in our program and they work great. I think out of all the birds we breed and use in our program the Eclectus is the over all best. The reason I think there are not as many Eclectus out there is that it is hard to get a good pair to produce fertile eggs. You were very lucky to get your pet to produce fertile eggs.

| hi there! well, I certainly agree with David, they are extremely hard to breed. They seem more to be lovers to people, versus each other...I do have one female as a pet for a couple of years now, and she's my pride and joy and in perfect feather. They are one of my favorites! Manon

| I hadn't planned on breeding my parrots because I heard Ecclectus could be challenging, but now I am reconsidering that decision. My hen has already laid 3 eggs since Christmas and will readily mate with the male anytime they are together. They are still lovable pets even though they have mated which I heard was rare as well. My husband and I wanted to see if the hen would be a good momma before pursuing breeding, so we place just a regular box in her cage and she set it up like a nest, laid an egg, and has been sitting on the egg. She still lets us handle her and the egg. Is this normal? What would we need to do to become official breeders? I don't want to forward without being prepared.
