Importance of food & environment with your birds...

How important do you think food, supplements, and the environment that their in is to you?  them?

Let's have a 'healthy' discussion on food intake and how they live in their cages and out of their cages.

I am trying to feed more "live" foods.  We have been feeding sprouts for awhile now.....I tried sprouting three or four years back and couldn't quite get it right(they would end up smelly, moldy or dried out).  I did a lot of reading and experimenting last year and now have a nice sprouting system going.  The most important thing I learned was that for birds "sprouts" are best right after the tail emerges up to a 1/4 inch(it is at this time that the seed or grain holds the most nutrition for birds) and before they green up.

I also got enthused about my kitchen garden this year and geared it towards the birds. Now when I don't keep up with picking the broccoli and end up with flowers its a bonus as the birds seem to love them and all that extra squash you can't even give away.....well, it no longer goes to waste.

We also do a bean and grain dish that the birds have really taken to. And while this is not classified as "live" food it does offer a great variety of nutritious ingredients and can be varied with additions.

I have not been much on giving supplements because I question how much they really consume.
