Hi, I have a friend w/ a male S.I. Eclectus and just met a new friend w/ a female.  Both (birds, not friends!) are about 4-5 years old and have never mated and have been caged alone, although both owners have several other parrots in other cages.

My friends are interested in trying to see if the birds will mate.  Any suggestions as to how we can facilitate this?  (i.e. should we take the male to the females residence, or, should be wait until Spring--we live in South TX so it's warm here).  Both owners are experienced birders, but have no experience breeding.  Any help will be apppreciated!!

Hello, to me this does not sound like a good idea. The main reason i am saying that is because when these two birds bond for the first time you are never going to get them back to the way they were. After a parrot bonds/mates with its own kind it will never have the same out look on humans because it will always want that 24 hour bond it had before. many people have this idea to mate there parrot just one time and it doesn't work that way. there are a number of problems that your always going to run into when breeding. Sorry to tell you bad news i know thats not what you wanted to hear but just know after mating them your parrot will no longer be the "same pet."

Hi,

I'd have to agree with Mark.  If they're pets -- leave them as pets.  Some groups are seeing putting pets together now, as cruel and

unusual punishment on birds.  There's enough PAIRS out there to acquire, with out putting pets or questionable singles together.  And

that's a whole other story/process altogether as well.

As far as Ec's go - tried my hand at that with several - already paired up pairs for years - and they never did anything. So I stopped doing

the Ec's.  They're sweet just as they are and there's quite a few up for adoption.

By the way folks, screening clients a little more is important - you may find your babies in adoption circles sooner that you might think.  It's pretty

sad out there.  I've always scrutinized clients, why, when if they had experience, or other birds before they get one of our babies.  There's folks out there

that want to match the bird with the color of their sofa set - it's simply amazing to me - that this truly exists, and people can be so shallow and uncaring about

these animals that will out-live us.

Be well,

Manon
